MDA Info

Posted On: Jul 13, 2010 (13:04:15)

The following letter was sent to us from Emily, our local MDA representative.  The attached PDF file is also an invitation to the Miracle Ride which Champaign Firefighters supply the meat for and cook for the campers.

Hi!  My name is Austin Michael Detering and my family and I would like to thank you for “Filling the Boot” for MDA.

I was born on October 17, 2008.  I spent the first 6 weeks of my life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO.  My family had so much to be thankful for because I got to go home the day before Thanksgiving.  While I was at Children’s, they performed a muscle biopsy and I was later diagnosed with a rare type of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy called Muscle-Eye-Brain (MEB) Disease.   MEB has caused me to have muscle weakness, loss of vision in my right eye and cognitive developmental delays.  There is currently no cure for MEB, but researchers are working on it.  I’ve never been able to swallow very well, so I had to have a feeding tube surgically placed in my belly so I can eat.  MEB is so rare that they haven’t been able to give my mommy and daddy a prognosis on what I will be able to do.  I am working on my motor skills and feeding skills with a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, and vision/developmental therapist several times a week and making great improvements.  I have the sweetest personality and love to look at books, listen to music, watch Sesame Street (especially Elmo!) and play with my brother and sister!

My mommy and daddy have recently become involved with our local MDA chapter.  We found out that they will help kids and adults like me by providing assistance for things like MDA clinic visits, repair wheelchairs and equipment, as well as summer camp and research to find treatments and cures for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.  All of this would not be possible without special people like you to help support the cause.  On behalf of my family and the numerous MDA families out there, we would like to say THANK YOU for “Filling the Boot” for MDA.  It means more than you’ll ever know!!!

Sincerely,
Austin, and my mommy and daddy -  Brett and Amber Detering

Central District Vice President Endorsment

Posted On: Apr 15, 2010 (18:36:38)

Brothers and Sisters,

Over the past few weeks the E-Board has met with Greg Johnson, Chris Coats and Tom Ganiere.  These 3 are running for Vice President of the AFFI Central District.  We thank each of the candidates for giving their time to come speak with us.  After meeting with all 3 the E-Board decided to endorse Chris Coats for the position.  Wednesday night at the Regular Union Meeting the body voted and supported the Boards decision.  All three were qualified and brought unique qualities to the position.  Chris Coats was the most in line with 1260's principle values.  Again thank you to Greg, Chris and Tom for your time and interest in the position.
